The Village Inn of Suttons Bay
“The Community Meeting Place for Over 100 Years”

Your Hosts: Richard Roberts and Joshua Deters

The Village Inn

The Village Inn is located in downtown Suttons Bay, Michigan in the heart of the Suttons Bay shopping district.

The Village Inn is conveniently located in Leelanau County between Traverse City and Northport and Leland on M-22 which circles the entire Leelanau Peninsula.

The Village Inn is smoke-free and also has free WiFi.

The History of The Village Inn in Suttons Bay

The first plat of the Village of Suttons Bay was recorded in 1865 and named Suttonburg in honor of the Sutton’s family. In 1871, F.J. Jellisch and his wife Maria Anna bought lots and built the Union Hotel on this site. The business welcomed overnight guests with good food and drink.

Throughout the years, this business has been handed down from one family to another. Each local family has operated a restaurant and “The Village Inn” stands today as one of the oldest continuously operated businesses in the state of Michigan. The name may have changed over the years but the original structure remains.

Today, the Village Inn, is celebrating its 140th year in the Suttons Bay community.

Our commitment to our community starts with you and we welcome you to our establishment as we hope you enjoy your time with our family at the Village Inn. Thank you for your support!

“Locally owned and operated”

We look forward to serving you at The Village Inn in Suttons Bay!

Richard Roberts

Martin Telgard, a boat builder and wife Leone opened the Bluebird in 1927 as a small sandwich and soda shop and it has remained in family hands ever since. With Martin’s talents as a craftsman and Leone’s dedication to excellence in the kitchen, the “Bird” slowly grew to be a restaurant and became the place to be when in Leland. Martin passed away in 1961 and Leone continued on, cooking every meal until her retirement in the mid-’70s.

All the while, Leland slowly evolved from a sleepy fishing village into a booming tourist town. Son Jim and his wife Nancy, both involved in the business since the ’50s, took over for a long stint, during which the Bluebird expanded its space to the present 10,000 sq.ft, and became one of the areas most popular dining establishments. Today, a third generation of Telgards run the business, now a 180 seat restaurant and a bar area which seats 100. The restaurant still serves its award winning whitefish and famous cinnamon rolls exactly the same way Leone and Martin first did in the early days.

Great Food & Service!!! On a very busy 4th of July Sunday, we accidently ran into this seemingly run of the mill pub & grill. Wow were we surprized once our food arrived. I had the best ever Rueben, my wife had the fish & chips which she said was “way better” than any of the upscale resturants we frequent “down state”. My teenage boys split the pizza which was to die for!!! The Waitress was very attentive and our beverages were never empty. Recommended highly!

I am so glad that I can report that our party of 6 adults and 5 children had a marvelous meal at the Blue Bird last week. The whitefish was fresh and flaky, the duck (a special that day) was cleverly prepared with a blueberry relish, my sons loved it. The salad bar was fresh with no hint of that “bag smell” on the greens. And of course the cinnamon rolls served before each meal are to die for. Since we have been going to the Blue Bird for years, I was relieved that the same quality has been maintained. Must also comment on the lovely garden and view from the dining rooms. We certainly recommend.

ABOUT THE APACHE TROUT GRILL

In 1994, Mike Connors moved to Traverse City with a vision of combining his love for the restaurant business and a passion for fly fishing as well as the outdoor adventures of Northern Michigan. Thus Apache Trout Grill was put into motion. The restaurant was named after the first fish to be put on the United States endangered species list. The Apache Trout, an Arizonan fish, was on its way to extinction just 40 years ago. Found only in the lakes and streams of the White Mountains on the Apache Indian reservation, this beautiful trout was saved by the efforts of those who believe in the value of conserving our nation’s great resources. Today, the Apache Trout has been removed from the endangered species list and has become a model for conservation.

Inspired by this success story, Mike has created Apache Trout Grill with a desire to preserve the qualities of restaurants past; great food, a well-trained and friendly staff set in a casual, comfortable neighborhood atmosphere. “Good food served right,” has become the motto at Apache Trout Grill.

After more than fourteen years, Mike, his wife Sheila and the Apache staff are still serving up those Traverse City favorites that have made them so famous. Signature dishes include, award winning BBQ ribs, fresh seafood, hand-cut, aged, choice steaks and their amazing homemade keylime pie. Apache Trout Grill has an atmosphere of warmth that makes a perfect evening with friends or a romantic meal for two. So, stop in for a glass of one of the outstanding local wines. You can also take advantage of the patio and enjoy an ice-cold beer to relax. The breath-taking sunset view over the bay is sure to sweeten your experience. Whichever choice you make, Mike, Sheila and the Apache Trout Grill Staff look forward to serving you!

7097 South Dunns Farm Road, Maple City, MI 49664-9618

We offer eight clean, comfortably-furnished nonsmoking rooms, reasonably priced and efficiently managed by our courteous staff. Overnight guests receive a 10% discount on award-winning breakfast items in our adjacent café and may use the motel’s recreational equipment, including badminton, volleyball, horseshoes, picnic tables and a shared campfire ring. No smoking or pets allowed in the rooms. The Foothills Cafe is open for breakfast and lunch 7:00am-3:00pm on Tuesday – Sunday, closed on Mondays. Close to Glen Arbor, golfing, casino, skiing and snowmobile trails.

We stopped here for breakfast after my wife passed it on a morning run. (Did not stay at the motel, only had breakfast there.) Really great coffee, great service. Portions were a little small for the price, but we were scraping every last bit off of our place. They only take cash or check.

Perfect! This place is awesome! In an area where your only lodging option is a resort, the Foothills is a breath of fresh air. It’s a down to earth charming vintage “motor lodge” and the adjacent cafe has the best breakfast you’ll find for miles! A definite destination if you need a place to stay on either end of your Manitou Island trip!

7100 N Manitou Trail, Northport, MI 49670 (M-22)

231-386-9923

We had a great lunch then went back the next day for dinner. 6 of us had Chicken, Burgers, with deep fried califlower and mushrooms. Pitchers of beer all around. Service was great, food was great, price was great.

We stopped for a quick beer. For a northern bar and restaurant, it was very clean and had some character. I would stop by again, probably for lunch or casual dinner next time. It was very busy for a Sunday. It actually had a wait for awhile at dinner time.

We’ve always loved Fischer’s for a burger and soup in the winter. The place is cozy and dark, the soup is always a winner, and it’s just a great place for a warm winter meal.

We recently stopped by for lunch in the summer, and enjoyed it every bit as much as we have during the winter. I’d been missing out on the perch all this time because it’s seasonal–my perch dinner was fresh, hot, and moist like it should be. My dining partner tackled the chicken dinner (four big pieces!) and gave it a thumbs up as well.

The Happy Hour has always been a staple for my family when I’m in Leland. This casual restaurant/bar is about as easy going as it gets. This is the kind of place that seems to specialize in fried food and friendly atmosphere, but you can’t go wrong with that. This is shown by the crowd that will form out the door. Thankfully there’s an old-school tabletop Ms. Pac-Man, which I covet, on the porch.

Fried clams, mushroom, cheese, cauliflower, etc. appetizers, great “bar fried” chicken, and some of the best fried perch and whitefish in the area are highlights on the menu. Excellent soups, burgers and other casual fare are on deck as well.

Make sure that you try the secret sauce! What seems to me to be a mix of mayonnaise and honey mustard, it’s extremely tasty on pretty much anything, particularly the apps.

Also, do yourself a favor and don’t miss out on my dad’s personal dream – the hot fudge cream puff! Vanilla, or, apparently on our last trip, peppermint stick ice cream sandwiched in a large puff pastry and smothered in Sander’s hot fudge. Damn, but we do love the Sander’s!

We ate here for the first time tonight — loved it!

We’d been a bit hesitant to try Fischer’s, even though it’s hugely popular, because what I’d seen and heard of the menu had led me to think that most of the food came out of the deep fryer. But our meals were several notches above “bar food” — and the warm, comfy, European-tavern atmosphere also exceeded our expectations.

For starters, I ordered a side salad while my partner ordered deep-fried caulflower, which our bed-and-breakfast innkeeper had recommended. To my surprise and delight, instead of the usual rural restaurant watery-lettuce/sad slice-o-tomato side salad, I was served a generous bowl of fresh, crisp lettuce and other vegetables — grape tomatoes, red cabbage, cucumber, radish. The house dressing, subtly seasoned with dill and other savory flavors, was great. My partner’s cauliflower was also good.

My partner ordered a turkey Reuben, and was impressed by the quality of the bread as well as by the fact that sandwich featured real slices of turkey, not processed deli meat. “Best Rachel I’ve ever had.”

I chose the daily special, a perch dinner. The perch came very lightly floured and sauteed, not curly and overcooked as perch often tends to be; the fish was absolutely fresh and delicious. The roasted baby potaoes on the side were lightly seasoned in a pleasing way, and also delicious. Crisp-tender filet green beans rounded out the plate.

[Dieter warning: The servings here are trencherman-size; we both could have easily split our meals with another person and still left full and happy. This ain't no nouvelle cuisine with a couple artistic dibs of this and smears of that on the plate. ]

Bonus: we’d ordered virgin Bloody Marys, and were surprised to find a pickled Brussels sprout in our drinks along with the usual pickle and olive. And you know what? It was good. (The Cove, a bar down the road in Leland, serves Bloody Marys with a smoked chub for a stirrer. I’m not sure why putting weird things in Bloodys is such a local custom here — but in this case it worked; and I think I’d choose a Brussels sprout over a minnow anyway.)

Sadly, we didn’t room left for dessert, which we’ve heard is also very good here.

Bar food taken to a higher level, in a charming Old World atmosphere — we were very pleased with our meals, and will certainly be back.
